Earlier this week, Nintendo announced Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity for Nintendo Switch. Serving as a sequel to Omega Force's 2014 Wii U title, Hyrule Warriors, the new Age of Calamity will take place in the Breath of the Wild era. Set 100 years before Breath of the Wild, this title will feature playable characters including Link, Zelda, and the Champions from the title such as Mipha, Daruk, Revali, and Urbosa.
What is Hyrule Warriors?
The 3D hack-and-slash Warriors (Musou) series by Koei Tecmo and Omega Force feature button-mashing action against hordes of enemies. Featuring RPG elements, characters can level up and equip stronger weapons over the course of the game. Players can also unlock various costumes and skins among other extra content.
Hyrule Warriors gained DLC following its Wii U release. The 3DS version, Hyrule Warriors Legends, later featured characters and references from The Wind Waker, Link's Awakening, and A Link Between Worlds. Nintendo finally capitalized with Hyrule Warriors Legends: Definitive Edition, released on Nintendo Switch, with all previous content melded into one title.
The previous Hyrule Warriors entry featured musical remixes and character redesigns of classic favorites. This included bringing back longtime favorites, such as Darunia, Ruto, Midna, Zant, Impa, and more. The title also featured co-op but was fairly limited on Wii U due to Gamepad use and framerate issues.
The Best and the Worst Elements
Hyrule Warriors offered tons of throwbacks to the Hylian lore featuring multiple games in the series. While the main entries included Ocarina of Time, Twilight Princess, and Skyward Sword, later DLC and entries branched out to several more games in the series. It even included animations like Young Link becoming Fierce Deity Link and cutting the Moon from Majora's Mask in two!
The Adventure Mode offered a single-player experience which could also be played with friends. This mode allowed players to find and discover new extras while tackling a series of missions. The maps were based on the original NES Legend of Zelda and could be taken on in nearly any order once unlocked. However, the progression issue came from rank and forced players to replay missions for items in order to completely clear the stage.
Nothing feels quite as satisfying as taking on hordes of enemies with favorite Zelda characters. For instance, Ganondorf's design features the Lord of Darkness dual-wielding two large swords. Each character has their own perks for damage and mobility. Omega Force brings out the best in Zelda's aesthetics and features some of the most gorgeous animations in a title related to the fabled series.
What to expect from Age of Calamity?
The upcoming Hyrule Warriors title will be developed by Omega Force once again. This includes Team Ninja lead, Yosuke Hayashi, who has produced titles in the Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Alive series. Nintendo also confirmed, on the official site, that the title will feature local co-op play.
Nintendo will announce more info on Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity on September 26. Furthermore, Nintendo has also confirmed that the title will launch on November 20, 2020.
