FFBE is mechanically like other tactical rpg games in the Final Fantasy franchise.  You don't have to have played any other part of FFBE in order to play this update, as it's a standalone campaign and is intended to draw in new players to the game, which originally released in Japan in 2019.

In addition to this standalone campaign update, they have additional incentives to entice new players into joining for a limited time. Per the press release from Square Enix:

  • Release Commemoration Login Bonus: All players can obtain Visiore, the premium in-game currency, valuable character enhancement materials and more simply by logging in daily.
  • Release Commemoration Quest: Players can attempt this quest once daily now through April 7. By completing this quest, players can earn valuable character enhancement materials.
  • FINAL FANTASY XIV: Shadowbringers Collaborative Event: Available now through April 14th, completing these quests players can earn exclusive items, including those to enhance Y’shtola.
  • FINAL FANTASY XIV: Shadowbringers Collaborative Summon: Players can obtain a unit or vision card of MR rarity or better from this limited-time banner, available now through April 14th. Players will also receive FINAL FANTASY XIV Summon Medals each time they complete a summon, which can be exchanged for valuable rewards.
If you join the game before the beginning of April (March 31st 11:59pm Pacific Standard), you can get additional rewards, a pre-registration bonus, as well, such as Y’shtola from Final Fantasy XIV in her Shadowbringers outfit.
Speaking of the Final Fantasy XIV collaborative events; right now there's another event where if you collect certain items during the event, you can get the character Thancred, also in his Shadowbringers attire.
